Mate, a herbal drink made from the dried leaves of yerba mate, is the national drink of Uruguay. No matter where you go, you will see people strolling around with a thermos under one arm (for the hot water) and a mate cup in the other.
The mate is drunk through a special metal straw called a bombilla that filters the liquid as you drink it. The cup, also called a mate, is traditionally made from calabash gourd.
